It’s not the fastest way but it will lead to organic interaction (because who wants to pay for fake interaction?) Some people fall under the trap of wanting THOUSANDS of followers while they only follow a select few. As if that means they are special or “win” or whatever. Thinking of it that way will lead to There are bots and things you can use to follow people and unfollow them. And a LOT of people will do this to build their following so their numbers look impressive. This does not build a good following. Not one that will get you the best interaction.1. Only follow accounts you are interested in having in your feed-regardless of IF they follow you back or not. (Don’t follow to unfollow or to get someone to follow back. People notice and it’s tacky and insincere… and rude.) You want a feed you enjoy so you’ll be more likely to interact with others and be genuine in those interactions as well. If you really want them to follow you back, (don’t message them asking to) then follow them and let them know you are alive by interacting. Liking and commenting, not just right then and there where you like and comment on everything going crazy on their posts, but rather make sure you visit their feed regularly to like and comment. This will not guarantee they’ll ever follow you back, but you’re more likely to catch their attention in a positive way that will make them want to interact with you as well.2. Figure out hashtags and switch them up with posts. Do not use the same hashtags for every post. Create a list of say, 100 or so (It could totally be more) hashtags, randomize the list them break them up into groups of 10-15, then alternate between them. I know you can use up to 30 hashtags before IG deletes the entire caption, but I like to toss in a few post specific hashtags with my posts a lot of the time.3. Post pictures you would want to see. You know what kind of photos you love to see on IG and you’re there to connect with others. So it stands to reason that you’d post the type of photos you like to see. Other wise it’s just going to feel like a chore and you’ll hate it.4. Interact with the accounts you enjoy. As I mentioned above under #1, interact with those whose feed you enjoy. Not all at once but regularly. It is a lot of work, but write it down and make a list of users you really enjoy the most of the ones you follow. Liking and commenting is a GREAT way for other users to see your name and they will be curious and check out your feed and many times will follow you back.5. Study what the accounts you like do and develop your own version. (Type of captions, types of images you like to see, how they use hashtags. etc) Find a handful 5-10 accounts you REALY love and study them. try to figure out what exactly you love about them and why. Once you figure out those details you can then figure out how to use those things to create your own unique feed that will attract the type of followers you want.6. Make sure people can look at your feed so they know if they want to follow you. Your goal is to attract real people not bots. If your personal IG account is private, consider making a second account that can be public. Private accounts aren’t usually followed by anything other than bots and “follow for follow” (another not so great thing to do.)7. Follow for follow sounds great… but really isn’t. It’s tempting to do a follow for follow thread as a way to gain a bunch of followers. But it’s really not. You’ll end up with a feed of random crap. It would be better to make a list of accounts and everyone can just go through them all, and look at each account and only follow those whose aesthetic you enjoy. Granted this isn’t a super popular thing to do because people really just want followers but again, you’ll end up not liking your feed and then there is a lot of unfollowing and it’s just a waste of time otherwise.8. Click on hashtags and see what photos pop up. If you like the majority of those photos, keep that hashtag in mind then add it to your big list of hashtags, and even consider following it. Following hashtags is a good way to fins new accounts that you might like and want to follow.

9. Post often.

Post often about 1x a day. More than that and depending on content you might lose followers. Can you post less than that? Yes. Though having a regular schedule (which I do not) helps build following. I do notice that the more regularly I post the better my follower growth is. It will take time to build a following but you’ll get there!

It's okay to not be okay.

So often I see friends and family, and even myself let life and stress get to us. You are strong. I don't believe strong means being unbreakable, never slowing, never wanting to quit. Being strong doesn’t mean always doing the impossible. I think it just means surviving things life throws at you. Being strong doesn't mean you are never sick, or never cry, or never fall. It means doing and being those things and allowing them to happen, but at the end you keep moving forward. The fact that you're here and you keep going is proof that you always keep getting up, even when it's hard and when you don't want to. Being strong doesn't mean there's never a moment of weakness, it's knowing you CAN BE "weak" and be sick, cry, sad, tired, want to quit, be stressed, have anxiety, break down, become depressed, etc. because you know that's not the end of your journey, but just a bump on the road to the great things you're destined for and you WILL get back up and move when you're ready to. It's okay to not be okay. Because YOU ARE STRONG and you will get past whatever slows you down, even if it feels impossible in the moment.

You are loved.

You are strong.

Author to Author: On responding to reviews

Don't.No really. Don't.

You might be asking "why? If you want to thank them, post a broad sweeping thank you on your blog, your website, your facebook page, or whatever social media sites you're on thanking all reviewers for taking their time to review.

What about good reviews? Should you respond to those? Again, no. Not even to say thank you. While a few might welcome the thank you, they are not as common as you might think.

A lot of readers have voiced that this makes them feel uncomfortable because it makes them feel like authors are following them and not in the good, social media way, but a looking over their shoulder as they write their reviews, scrutinizing them sort of way.

I don't know about you, but I could be messaging my husband on messenger and if he was standing over my shoulder it would still bother me. And if you're thinking "Hey, that doesn't bother me, so it's okay if I do it." Think again. You're okay with it, but you don't know who isn't.

If the above isn't a good enough reason to not respond to reviews, ever, here's one more reason.

Reviews are for readers, not authors.

Yeah, believe it or not, reviewers don't (or shouldn't) write reviews to boost someone's ego. They are to share how they experienced a book, what they loved, what they hated. Whatever they wish to share
with other readers.
Reviews help other readers decide if this is the book for them.

Sure, the more reviews a book has the better it is for the author. But that doesn't change the reason the reviews were written in the first place, or the main purpose of reviews.

Some people love "love triangles" and others despise them. If a reviewer says "Ugh, another book with a love triangle! - 2 stars" Another reader might say "Sweet!" and one click.

Should you read your reviews? Eh, it's up to you. Some say to NEVER read them, others say they will always read every single one.

That's a personal decision. But if all you want to do is respond, maybe try to avoid reading them.

However, if you do, screen shot the good ones for when you have an "everything I write is crap" day. If you read the negative reviews, either take it worth a grain of salt, or try to learn from it - even if you don't agree with it.

And yes, even if it's really harsh.

An "I can't believe how badly this was written," review could hurt, but maybe take that mean review and try to see what they meant (sans nastiness) and reread your book or parts of it through their eyes, see if you can see how they'd feel that way about it. Perhaps you'll notice things in your writing that you could improve on.

If a reader says that you only tell, study the difference between show and tell and how to improve. Same with any other critique.

If you read the reviews, don't take them personally, even if they are attacking you as a person, because those attacks really aren't about you at all, but about them. Glean what you can and see if there's something you could improve on, because we should always be working to improve our craft.

If a review really upsets you, and it is okay if one does, don't blast them (even blotting out their name) on social media. Either talk to your significant other, parents, or a private message between you and a really good friend and rant to them to get your feelings out.

But above all, just remember that in the end:

Reviews are for readers, not authors.

The Fallen - Out now!

And so the end of my first series comes to an end. Yes another big scandal broke out in the book community (That one who plagiarized a ton of authors.) but ever since then many have taken it as a chance to crap on how others go about their journey, simply because it’s different. To crap on them for a million and one things that have nothing to do with it. I can’t even count the number of times I have see something like “It’s okay if others do XYZ, but I would never do that. I’m not judging, I just don’t respect those who do.” There are people who’ve been saying that anyone who does ACB aren’t real writers, or who get such-n-such accomplishment this way doesn’t actually count. I don’t know a single author who writes a book and thinks, “Gee, I sure hope all my fellow writers love me and thinks everything I do counts.” No. They think “I hope readers love my books and I can pay my bills with the money I make so I can do this for life.” If it’s not right for you, don’t do it. But don’t go so far as to convince yourself it’s bad or wrong across the board. Because, if it’s not illegal it isn’t bad or wrong. It’s just different. Just because doing things one way isn’t for you, does not mean that those who choose those things are less of a “real” author or deserve any less or no respect than anyone else. Chances are, if you run across another author who’s approaching their career in a different way than what is right for YOU, they aren’t doing anything to hurt you, but are instead, doing what is right for THEM in the best way they know how. People do not have to do things the hardest way possible for it to count. Let me say that again. PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO DO THINGS THE HARDEST WAY POSSIBLE FOR IT TO COUNT. People do not have to do things the hardest way possible for it to count, for them to be a “real” author, for it to be valid, for them to deserve respect. It doesn't "mean more" to do things one way and not the other. One is just a better fit for some individuals. We are all climbing our own mountains and starting at completely different spots. Whether it’s using a ghostwriter to help flesh out a novel, or hiring someone to create a plot for you, or write your outline for you or get your letters through a boxed set, or writing in a genre you don’t like, or put their books up for consideration for an award, or hire out someone to do all their marketing for them, or whatever. Just because it is not the way you want to go with your craft does not mean they are less of an author, less of a person, or deserving disrespect. Let’s face it. Saying “I just don’t respect…” is you actively choosing to disrespect others for their choices and their journeys. You are not better then them for doing things your way, and they are not better than you for doing things their way. You’re just on different paths. That’s all. I once dated a guy a few years older than me when I was in college who made known that he didn’t respect how I was going through college and that I wasn’t a “real” adult. Why? Because when he was in college he was out of state, and had to work three part time jobs to afford housing, he took up smoking and drinking so much coffee he had constant ulcers. And I was going to college in the town I grew up in and, wanting to minimize my college debt, lived with my parents, who I’ve always enjoyed being around. I had ONE part time job and a full schedule of classes which I sometimes maxed out. I did this to minimize my debt, and allow myself a chance to socialize, I joined my sorority where I met a few girls who I’m friends with even today and can’t imagine not having them in my life. They are like family. I did this, so I could take care of my physical and mental health, I did this so I could sleep and have time to study and get decent grades. He didn’t like that my experience was “easier” and more fun. So he judged me for it and that’s what made him an ass. Did his college experience count more than mine? Nope. Was he more “adult” or deserving of more respect? No. Not even a little bit. Was I? Also no. The paths we took were vastly different and we did what was right for ourselves. (No, this relationship didn’t last long. He was an ass for judging me.) So maybe, we can let everyone do what is right for them. As long as it’s legal, that’s all that should really matter anyway. You don’t have to be friends, or maybe even give friendship a chance, because who knows, you might have a lot to learn from each other even if you don’t think so. They can do them, and you do you.

Don't crap on others because they don't fit into your personal ideal of what you want your author journey to look like

Just virtually fist bump them as you walk on by for having the guts to also go after their dream. Because in the end, isn’t that what we are all trying to do?

More than a goal: NaNoWriMo 2017

Last night I finished my fourth NaNoWriMo attempt and win. This year was different.

First I was aiming to write two books (only counting one books words toward NaNo), one of which had a special meaning and dedication but no deadline, the other has a deadline. One that is fast approaching. Unfortunately, and with a heavy heart, I had to set the one without a deadline aside because I wasn't writing either fast enough.

So the book I'd wanted to write this month, the one with the special dedication, was sadly put to the side. The Moirai.

But if you've been patiently waiting for book three of The Hunted, rest assured I will return to it soon. In fact putting it aside has helped me to power through so much of this current book with the deadline so much faster.

I've been rewriting an old book from scratch and editing it at the same time, (because deadlines) which has been a huge struggle in and of itself and it's far from my normal process.

But back to Winning NaNo. This year wasn't different solely because I attempted two books at once. This year has been a year of challenges. One in particular that I haven't spoken about publicly.

I was behind on NaNo since DAY ONE, and even with a few attempts at catching up and getting ahead, I still floundered. My graph never looked like it struggled so hard before.

Win of 2017

There were a few days where I was SO CLOSE to catching up, only to fall behind. The only day in November that I was on target was on day 30. I even managed a few words past my target.

I could have chosen to give up on NaNo this year and it wouldn't have mattered. No one would have been disappointed in me, there wouldn't have been any repercussions. I could have had less stress on my shoulders this month.

But I didn't quit.

I didn't quit because I needed a "win." Not from anyone else, but from myself. I needed to see a concrete goal and I needed to hit that goal. Not for bragging rights or to feel special, but to remind myself that despite a rough few days, weeks, months, etc. I could set my mind to something and achieve it.

And I did.

With a lot of struggling, I achieved my goal for the 4th year in a row. I didn't quit, even though there were a million times throughout the month where I thought a win was impossible, where I resigned myself to just getting whatever I could and it was good enough.

There wasn't a single day during this month that I didn't doubt I could win. It wasn't until halfway through day 30 that it felt possible.

And while in comparison of my previous years where I always won NaNo early, sometimes before they would even let you validate it, this year is not as impressive. Sure I won, but I didn't go past 50k the way I did the last three years, yet, to me, it is my biggest win thus far because I had so many challenges.

Sure NaNo was a goal, and a goal I managed to keep even by the skin of my teeth. But, it's more than that. It's a reminder that hard times, and countless obstacles and challenges can slow me down, but they can't, and won't, keep me from reaching my goals.

On Focus - Write all the words!

Publishing is a long, long, long, process. I wish it was simple as waking up in the morning with a bright and shiny new idea bouncing around in my head. Pounding away at the keyboard until it was all out on "paper" and then hitting publish.

I suppose one could do that, but many of us are perfectionists and want to put the best versions of our books out there for readers.

There's so much more to the process than most would think from the outside. There's the multiple rounds of edits, proofing, formatting, etc. For self published authors, and let's face it, even traditionally published authors, there's also connecting with fans, promoting, setting up ads, beta readers, cover design, and so on and so forth.

So, who doesn't dream of being as productive as possible? I mean we all have deadlines, whether they are contractual or self imposed. And I don't know about you, but I hate missing deadlines.

A problem that I have struggled with over and over was lack of focus. Either I never get around to sitting down, or I sit down and do everything under the sun except write. It's taken me a while and a lot of trial and error to find something that works.

It's my hope that something in this blog post helps you out. If not, don't give up. Keep searching for the thing you need. Take stock of what's worked for you in the past and what hasn't. Maybe you'll end up creating a whole new way of focusing that could help many others like you.

So here are a few tips and tricks that have helped me be more productive with my time. Perhaps you'll find one that helps you.

Create a ritual.

No, nothing crazy, no sacrificing books or pens to the writing gods. But set a routine that is the same every time you sit down to write.

Drink the same drink, tea, coffee, whatever your taste buds want. Listen to the same music, sit in the same spot. You get the point. Just do the same thing every time you mean to write.

No it won't become habit the first time, or the second, or the third. But give it two weeks, a month. Test it out. But keep at it, and whatever you do - don't alter it. At least not any time soon. if it works for you, then keep at it. If you want to alter it, do so slowly over time. Nothing big, or you will lose that routine.

Create a schedule.

This has always been something that was hard. I'd go through dozens of different scheduled and stick to them for an hour. But once I wrote it down, everything changed. My productivity went through the roof.

It was still hard to stick to at first, but it helped endlessly and it allowed me to add in much needed self care without guilt that I wasn't sitting at the keyboard typing like mad.

Sprinting.

Don't panic! Not like... running or anything.

Timed writing sprints.

For me doing 20 minute sprints with 10 minute breaks or 25 minute sprints with 5 minute breaks have worked the best. It's enough time to get words on the page, but not so much that I feel like it's never ending. It makes the hard days easier. And on the easy days, it reminds me to breathe and take a break.

Try them out. See which works for you.

Make Music

Create a play list. Either one that you listen to for every book you write or a new one for every, series, or for every book to get you in the mood for that story.

I do all of the above. Depending on my need for new music. I have an overall playlist just to write to, but I'll make a playlist for every book. Those in the same series are also combined. I tend to pick a song that fits the chapter or scene that I'm writing and have it on repeat until I'm finished with it. Then I'll move on to the next song that fits the next scene or chapter.

That's it. Those are the things that have worked for me. I'd love to know what works for you, so if you feel like sharing leave a comment below!

Word Counts - Do they really matter?

I've always been curious about word counts in books I love as I read, and curious about the word counts of similar books as I'm writing.Though there's a more important reason to care, at least if you are interested in traditional publishing. Of course, not everyone is.

So this list is for those who are just curious and those who are interested traditional publishing.

So before I get to the list, I'll explain the importance of word count and traditional publishing.

First, you have to know if you're writing a short story, a novel, or an epic. And these can change based on what the publishers want for the genre, but the generic industry standard word counts are as such:

Flash: 1-1k

Short Story: 1k - 7.5k

Novellette: 7.5k - 20k

Novella: 20k - 50k

Novel: 50k - 110k

Epic: 110k+

I've seen a lot of debate about the above chart, but it is what it is. It's been the industry standard for a long, long, long time now. Yes there are trends where some readers and/or authors demand a book not be called a novel until X number of word count. But preference isn't what makes the rules. It's just what it is and has been.

Either way, when you are trying to traditionally publish, whatever genre you are writing in, you need to make sure you follow the agents/publishers guidelines! I can not emphasize how important that is.

And moving on!

If you want to traditionally publish you will quickly find out that publishers and agents will expect a certain word count for the book you're submitting based on genre. For this blog post I will talk mostly about Fantasy.

I'll say now, that there will be rare exceptions, but we will stick with the general expectations and not get too into the outliers.

After scouring the web, the word count number I found for fantasy novels, that agents and publishers are looking for, should range around 87-113k.

Much shorter than that and it doesn't fit the expected story that agents and publishers look for. Longer than that and it is believed that the author doesn't know how to edit down their book and that the MS holds a lot of unnecessary fluff.

But readers keep saying they want longer and longer novels. Yes, but that's something indie authors are more freely able to deliver. Traditional publishers are looking for something that fits their standards.

I've heard (bu have yet to find the source) that Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas was originally closer to 200k and rejected over and over until it was closer to the 100k mark. Because it did so well is the reason I believe they gave her the freedom to reach outside the expected norm, which is why her later books are quite a bit longer.

if you plan or wish to try traditional publishing, I highly recommend you research what word count agents and publishers are looking for. It is different for Fantasy, Young Adult, Middle Grade, Memoirs, Nonfiction, and so on.

So now on to the list. Again, this is sticking straight with fantasy series of YA, NA, and Adult.

THRONE OF GLASS

Throne of Glass - 113,655

Crown of Midnight - 114,494

Heir of Fire - 163,266

Queen of Shadows - 183,840

Empire of Storms - 195,332

GAME OF THRONES

A Game of Thrones - 292,727

A Clash of Kings - 318,903

A Storm of Swords - 414,604

A Feast for Crows - 295,032

A Dance with Dragons - 414,788

LORD OF THE RINGS

The Hobbit - 95,022

The Fellowship of the Ring - 177,227

The Two Towers - 143,436

Return of the King - 134,462

THE HUNGER GAMES

Hunger Games - 99,750

Catching Fire - 101,564

Mockingjay - 100,269

DIVERGENT

Divergent - 105,143

Insurgent -
106,028

Agilent -
110,354

MAZE RUNNER

The Maze Runner - 101,182

The Scorch Trials - 96,869

The Death Cure - 87,385

HARRY POTTER

Philosopher’s Stone - 77,325

Chamber of Secrets - 84,799

Prisoner of Azkaban - 106,821

Goblet of Fire - 190,858

Order of the Phoenix - 257,154

Half-Blood Prince - 169,441

Deathly Hallows - 198,227

TWILIGHT

Twilight - 118,975

New Moon- 132,758

Eclipse - 148,971

Breaking Dawn - 186,542

HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - 46333

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - 52150

Life, the Universe, and Everything - 51978

So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish - 42859

Mostly Harmless - 64659

The Salmon of Doubt - 87903

If conforming your book to word counts is not for you, that's okay. Most wouldn't think it, but sitting for long periods of time is probably one of the worst things you can do for your body.

So I found a few short videos that pinpoint the areas that effect writers the most.

So maybe save these videos and when you're writing this month, take a few minutes a day to do one or two. But when do you kill a character off? Why?

There are many good reasons to kill a character off, or two, or ten... yet on the other side of that coin, there are terrible reasons to kill off characters.

When not to kill off a character

1. To make readers cry. - If you want an ugly cry book or just to make readers sad, this is not the way to go. And killing off any ol' character won't do.

2. To add shock value. - If you're killing a character just for shock value, maybe reevaluate the events in your plot/storyline.

3. Because you're tired of writing them. - Or they are just an extra character you created just for the purpose of killing. At this point you should probably think about going back and writing out the character and just not having them in the book at all. Every character should have a point in being there, other than to kill off.

4. You just want to add some gore and bloodshed to your book. - While it can be entertaining to write or read, if it's just a death for the sake of writing a death, maybe think again. You want every event in your book to have a purpose. Writing a death without a reason is just fluff. If you can't tell if it's fluff or not, try taking the scene out comepletely. Does it make a difference to how the plot advances? If yes, go crazy my friend. If not... you might want to consider leaving it out.

When to kill off a character.

All these reasons are assuming that characters to kill off do not fall under any of the above categories.

1. Motivate your main character. - If losing someone is the only way to break your character in order to force them to change and grow, or to get them to take action.

2. If it advances the plot. - Much like the above, a character death can change how other characters react. It can also lead to the next thing that must happen for the story to continue. Think of Julianna in Vanilla Sky.

3. Creates realism in your world. - If you're writing high fantasy and there are wars all over the place, not having any characters getting hurt or injured will throw readers out of the world. How could people fight in a war but still have no one die?

4. Fitting fate for a character. - If the character's fate fits. Such as, a former villain becoming good, by sacrificing themselves to save the hero of the story.

Every character death should have a purpose. The characters that are killed off should be well rounded and fully fleshed out. They should have a purpose in the book/series that is other than dying.

When you kill off a character, one thing to keep in mind is - why this specific character? Is it because it's convenient? Or is it because this specific character's death will serve a greater purpose in helping things to move forward?

There are a ton of other reasons to kill and not kill off a character but I just wanted to give you the basics on it.

Can you think of other reasons to kill off a character or reasons not to? Being alone, does not equal being lonely. You can be surrounded by people and still feel and be alone. Many of us have felt like that at least once in our lives.

Being alone is a big part of self care.

I'll admit that I didn't have the best experience in school. I was picked on and sometimes even bullied. Yet I was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of my peers. I was lonely.

Until I realized I didn't need to be.

I didn't change who I was or have a movie makeover and suddenly become the ideal beauty and dating the high school quarterback. No. I just stopped being lonely by realizing I was good enough for me.

I took the time to find out what I enjoyed. I found things I was passionate about, I learned more about them and I also found out what held no interest for me. I spent my alone time developing my mind and heart.

I had a passion for creating. For art and telling stories through drawing, photography, reading, and writing... and other forms of creativity. I even learned to knit, and despite the "grandma" jokes I often get over it, it's not a cake walk and it does take skill as well as having many benefits. I threw myself headfirst into each of those things.

I've gone to movies alone, gone out to restaurants for lunch alone, shopping, and to signings alone. I struggled with those things for much of my life because of the stigma attached to doing anything alone. It's not always comfortable, but I'm no longer willing to put off what I want because it makes others uncomfortable that I am willing to do what they deem "group activities" by my self.

I go to movies alone if my husband doesn't wish to see it with me. Who talks during a movie anyway? I take road trips over a thousand miles alone because my husband is constrained by his work schedule. (Okay, I might have a dog or two with me, but they aren't much for conversation.) I go out to lunch alone, because I'm hungry and don't want to just grab a burger or eat a sandwich at home but want a nice warm meal I didn't have to cook.

Since then, I've never stopped searching for things to learn and love. I can spend my days alone with my dogs and never feel alone. Yet, my social skills are still on the fence of being okay and being super awkward. (Okay, mostly just super awkward.)

Someone close to me had the opposite experience in school. Always the popular person, surrounded by several people all the time. But this person never learned how to be alone. With free time and no one around, they are lost and struggle to find something that engages their mind. Though they have tremendous social skills and can become BFFs with a total stranger in less than five minutes.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing at all. In fact, there are plus and minuses to both our polarizing experiences. What we both lacked is a kind of balance. Something we are both working on to this day.

You see, balance to both is important. For your mind, heart, and soul, you must learn to be alone, to discover who you are without anyone or anything to distract you from it. But you must also learn to know what it is like to be surrounded by others and how to communicate.

Being around others is a good thing, but being alone is also very misunderstood, yet very important.

Knowing who you are and knowing what makes your heart soar, is a huge part of self care. Share - Share their posts/social media announcements, book links, covers, etc. Spread their books, covers, links, events, etc all over social media.

2. Review - (A helpful review why a book would or wouldn't be for other readers.) Review their books on amazon, Goodreads, etc any and all reviews help them reach the right readers. If all you can think of to say is "I loved this book!" that review is still EXCELLENT! Don't think that because it isn't long that it isn't just as valuable, because it is.

3. Request the book(s) at your favorite bookstores and libraries.

4. Join their street team or fan group and see what support they need. Many times authors will request help with a certain goal they have in their street team. Bonus, many authors love to reward their ST for all their hard work and dedication!

5. Tell friends - Not quite the same as sharing the social media posts. If your friends are looking for something new to read, be your favorite author's hero and suggest your their books.

BONUS: If you get an ARC (advanced reader's copy), download a free copy, or win a book through a giveaway - leave a review! (Leave a review on as many platforms as you can.)

Amazon is the biggest, Goodreads is also owned by amazon but it's another good place to leave a review since it's so reader-centric. If your author is wide (not exclusive to amazon KU) consider leaving reviews on iTunes, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and any other platform they are on.

BONUS 2: Follow the author on their social media and interact with them. Amazon, goodreads, twitter, instagram, facebook, tumblr, etc. wherever!

Do you have other ways of supporting your favorite authors for free? And if you know me, you know that while I am pretty quiet regarding my fandoms, you'll have noticed that I can't keep that quiet over my love of Game of Thrones!

I've never had a silicone strainer before so I can't wait to see how well it works!

I pulled out this cute little booklet and opened it. It's a note/sketch pad! And the art is just beautiful. Also, Look at the map inside! I have a thing for story maps. <3

This sleep mask was the next thing I unboxed was this sleep mask. I already have one, so my husband didn't hesitate to snatch this up. lol He won't admit it but heis totally into book stuff.

Next I pulled out this candle. So far I've loved every single candle in the fairy loot boxes, but this one, while beautiful, kinda churns my stomach. The combination of the Lemon verbena, vanilla, and pear reminds me of a horrible medication I had to take once as a child.

I lit it to see if it improved at all, and I don't might it lit. It's much better. But as a scent when you first open it... I'm not a fan.

Also in the box was this print of northern lights. It's so pretty. I love images of night skies and northern lights and even snow. (Images of snow are beautiful, actual snow... I'll pass!)

There were also little extras in this months box. Two samplers that look really interesting and a temporary tattoo to go along with the Blackwing one.

I found this beautiful book pendant at the bottom of the box. :D I LOVE it! WICKED LIKE A WILDFIRE. It sounds really interesting and I can't wait to start on it! Though from the sound of it, I think it's based in a real place in our world. I'm interested to find out how it fits the OTHER WORLDS theme of the box!

The letter from the author says that there are hints to the story hidden in the cover. I think I might have found them, but we will see!

So that was August's Fairy Loot box! :D I absolutely loved it!

I can't wait to see what September's box brings!

And sadly, I've still yet to find a reading buddy. :(

Maybe this will be the month?

#FairyLoot123901

POV 1st vs 3rd - SYWTWAB

When it comes to point of view and which to write in, there is a debate. Which is better? First or third person?* But does it really matter?

*For the purpose of this blog, we are going to ignore the second person point of view as it's rarely used in fiction.

Some say yes, others say no.

If you ask around you will get a host of responses, many of which are probably "Do whatever is popular in your genre."

Is this wrong? The short answer is no.

But there is more to consider.

Yes, you should take what is popular in your genre into consideration, but you should also do what feels right for your story.

When I first started out, I was confident I would only write in third person. I was certain beyond all doubt that it was the only point of view the stories I wanted to tell would need. Then came Sound of Silence. It surprised me in so many ways. I had a few false starts until I realized that this story needed to be told in first person. It opened my eyes to paying more attention to the story and going with what works best for the book, what gives it the best life it could have. Some people will tell you that one brings the reader into the story better than the other. That one is closer, more personal, and allows the reader to delve deeper into the characters and story. I disagree, I believe both points of view have that potential. It’s all in what the story demands and whether or not the author takes advantage of that particular point of view.

To decide what works best for you and your story, you need to know your options. (Please forgive my less than awesome examples, I just pulled them from air to give you sense of the POV.)

Lets go over the points of view:

First person: This is a limited point of view. "I" is telling the story, the main character is the narrator. The reader only knows exactly what's going on in the character's head.

Ex: I looked into her eyes and knew I would regret what I was about to say.

Third person Omniscient: The narrator is not a character in the book and also knows everything going on in all characters heads. This POV uses "he" and "she" to tell the story.

Ex: Little did he know that he would soon regret his words as he lifted his gaze to meet hers. (In this example, the narrator and the reader know the character will regret something, but the character himself does not. Yet.)

Third person deep(limited): This point of view is almost like a mix of the first two but rather than having access to all characters thoughts, feelings, actions, and knowledge the narrator only has access to one character at a time. This POV also uses "he" and "she" to tell the story.

Ex: He looked into his eyes and swallowed hard. He knew he would regret his words.

Then there is past and present tense. Which is a while other topic, but I'll touch on it here just a little as it goes along with this subject a little and is also something to take into consideration when choosing the narrative style for your novel.

First, past: I walked to the door. I laughed until tears streamed down my face.

First, present: I walk to the door. I laugh and tears stream down my face.

Both of these are fairly evenly common.

Third, past: She walked to the door. She laughed until tears streamed down her face.

Third, present: She walks to the door. She laughs and tears stream down her face.

Third, past is way more common than third present. (It's also the most common and traditional POV in fiction.) I've heard a lot of readers say that reading third present is jarring.

Both have their strong points and can really bring a reader into the story, but both have their weak points.

When not written with care, third person can become cold and distant to the reader, lacking the ability to draw them in.

First person can become trite. Where the character ends up in unbelievable situations and always just "happen" upon information the reader wants to know. (Guessing the exact thing that's happening without any logical reason for them to come to that conclusion - ex: guessing a password or figuring out a puzzle they'd have no reason to be able to solve on the second or third try.)

You can do first with a singular POV character, or several. You can do third omniscient and be in every characters head at once, or limited and be in one character's head, or have a few characters the narrator moves between. (Make sure the narrator doesn't head hop within a scene, paragraph, or sentence. It's recommended to have some sort of marker between character POV changes such as scene changes or chapters.)

I've even seen authors who have one or two first person character POVs and a few third person characters in a single book. I am not a fan of this narrative style and it often kicks me out of the story, but that's my preference. Others enjoy it.

Whichever POV and tense you use, just keep it consistent to avoid losing the trust of the reader.

Once you understand the different points of view, pick up several books with the point of view you think fit your book and read. See how other authors use that particular POV to bring the reader into their world.

If you tend to write in one POV the majority of the time, try writing a short story in a different one. See how it feels. The writing might go slower at first but that's because it's new. You will get the hang of it. And it might help to pin point weak points in your writing and in the end make you a better writer for it.

Don't count on readers to tell you. Some people will argue that one point of view is superior to another. This is just not true. Both first person and third have their own advantages.

Write a short scene in each of these styles. See what feels right for the story, what lets you closer to the characters and the emotions you want to portray to your readers.

In the end, only you can know for sure what point of view to use. Just remember not to limit yourself!

The Moirai Cover reveal

I LOVE this cover and I'm so excited to finally share it with everyone!Title: The Moirai (The Hunted series: Book 3)Author: Ali WintersGenre: Urban FantasyRelease date: TBAEven Death has a price to pay.Still heartbroken, Nivian has lost the will to reap. (Link at the end.) It's 5 signs you are a writer, and 3 that you're not.

The one that stuck out most to me was #3 on the "why you're not" list. I see it a lot and it makes me sad.

The best thing about writing and reading is that a reader can read a book by a different author every day for their whole life. A reader can support more than one author.

It’s a business that doesn’t have to be a competition.

And that in itself is rare.

There isn’t only one author's books that are “the only ones worth reading.” There are countless books by countless authors that are worth reading. There are countless styles of writing, countless topics and genres of books that have been, are being, and will be written. And readers will buy from several authors, or dozens of authors.

Readers who buy and read my books can and will also buy and read other author's books!

I'm not so arrogant to think that mine are the only books worth reading, because they aren't. But they most definitely are worth reading.

There is no reason why we can't support each other. We should happily share, with no expectations. Expectations will only lead to disappointment and hurt feelings, especially when the other person is unaware of them.

"I shared so-n-so's book, but they didn't share mine, I'll never share their stuff again!"

If you would like someone to share your book--then ask. It's as simple as that. Support others, because you want to show support for your fellow authors, not because you want something in return.

There's no reason to not support another author if you enjoy their books. Their success will not diminish yours. In fact, it may actually help you. A friend is more likely to help you out than a stranger.

Do you love an author? Do you have a friend that's an author? Go and pimp their books.

You don't have to take others down, or pretend they don't exist in order to build yourself up. Doing those things won't actually help you. This isn't a gladiator sport, so why do so many of us treat it like one?

Want to know what helps you? Having other author friends! Yes, it's true. You're an author and so are they. You can relate to each other in ways that non-writers can't.

You can share the little things that excite you, a funny line, the fact that you wrote THE END on the first draft (or final draft) of your current MS, you can talk about how to get through a scene that is giving you issues while staying true to the plot, subplots, or themes.

Your non-writer friends might not actually care. Or if they do care, they might not understand what the big deal is.

But your writer friends will.

Your writer friends will understand what it took to hit that milestone, and they will rejoice with you and truly understand every drop of blood, sweat and tears you shed.

You can help each other out. Maybe one of you is really good at graphics, maybe the other is good at promotion. Whatever it is, you can help boost yourself and them at the same time.

You should want your friends to succeed. Because they are your friends. But also, if they succeed and you've been a good friend, they will take you with them to the top. Unless they are a crappy friend, in which case, they probably dropped a few hints along the way that they suck as humans and you probably should have caught on.

But seriously, be a good friend, help each other. Because it doesn't have to me you or me, it can be both of us!

I recommend reading this blog post.

5 signs you may be a writer, and 3 that you're not

How to add an email to your Kindle approved senders list.

As an author, I've sent many books straight to kindle to readers and reviewers. So with that bit out of the way, on to the "how to" of it. I promise it's fast and easy. 1. Go to www.amazon.com/myk 2. You will see three tabs across the top.

Click on Settings. 3. That's it, that's all there is to it. Fast, easy, and helps authors be a tiny bit more secure when sending out their hard work. Now give the author your kindle address and wait while your shiny new book comes in.

________________________________________

BONUS HOW TO!

How to find your kindle email address!

1. I will label them accordingly.

In my research, this is the typical order I've seen these pages in, but they can be moved around based on personal or publisher preference.

FRONT MATTER

Full Title page*

The title of your publication, author name and publisher logo (if applicable) shows on this page. *The full or half title pages can be switched based on preference.

Half Title page*

Only the title of your publication shows on this page.

Copyright

The legal bit, this is usually where you'll find the ISBN number along with publisher, year published, and more. (This will be a future topic where I'll go into more detail.)

Dedication

blab blah

Table of Contents (optional)

The list of chapters and front/back matter of the book

MANUSCRIPT

The body of the work (AKA: The chapters/story/etc)

BACKMATTER

Epilogue

A continuation of the story meant to bring closure or a hint of more to come. Usually shorter than a typical chapter, but usually no longer than a chapter.

More by Author (Optional/Front or back)

A list of other works written by the author

Title page

The book title, author name, and subtitle of the book (if a series.)

Acknowledgments (Optional/Front or back)

Glossary (Optional)

Vocabulary terms and their definitions that are found in the book. This is handy for fantasy books with cultures and terms that have been created for the book/series.

Bonus material

Any extra bonuses you wish to include, notes, quotes, deleted scenes, discussion questions, links or more.

Author Bio

A sentence or paragraph about the author, sometimes including author photo.

And there you have it. There can be more or less included in both the front and back matter, but these are the most common things you can find in fiction works. Many publishers and authors will move things around, to decide on the things you want for your books and the order you prefer them in, flip through your favorite books and check them out.

Do Not Engage - How to handle a negative review.

Lately, there seems to be a surge of reviewers being told what they can and can't post as reviews, and when.A reviewer can post a review of 1-5 stars, whenever they please. They can have any reason for giving

a book any rating they want. Why? Because it's their opinion, not yours, or mine. It's theirs.

The only thing a review should probably avoid, is attacking the author. Because that's just not cool. But no one takes those reviews seriously anyway.

First things first - reviews are for readers, not authors.

They might be posted to your book, but they are there to help other readers know if your book is something they want to read or not. They aren't to boost an author's ego. It's really for the best that people who wouldn't enjoy it don't buy it. The small amount of royalties isn't worth a thousand people buying your book and hating it only to leave those types of reviews.

Reviewers: Always post the reviews you want to post. Stick with your honest opinion and keep doing what you do! EVERY review counts! If anyone gives you crap for it, block their butt.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

You message, call, whatever your closest friends and cry about it. You talk about how stupid that reviewers opinion is, and then you suck it up buttercup, and get over it.

What you do not want to do, under any circumstances is engage. Ever.

Many are even of the opinion that you shouldn't even respond to positive reviews.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Ask(demand) that the reviewer take down/change their review.

Tell them they shouldn't have left a review, for any reason.

Down vote their review. (They know it's from you!)

Message them directly over facebook and tell them they are wrong, they suck, or whatever.

Post the review in any public forum, especially to

Harass them in any way, shape, or form.

Send your friends to do any of the above.

What should you do? Simple.

DO NOT ENGAGE.

Move on and go find other readers elsewhere. You don't have to go back to that reviewer in the future.

Something to remember: A reviewer's opinion is not wrong, because it's their opinion, not yours or anyone else's. It's an opinion, even if they are trying to make it come across as a fact.

Information is either correct or not, opinions are just how someone felt about something.

Giving a book free because it was an ARC, or a gift, or they won it, or whatever is not a reason to expect a 5 star review.

I know what you're asking. "But Ali, when should I expect a 5 star review? What does an author have to do to get one for sure?"

My answer is simple. You can expect a 5 star review when you write a book, publish it, and some one posts a 5 star review because that is how they truly 100% not uninfluenced by you or anyone, feel that way.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but hey. That's life. You aren't perfect, and even if you were, you'd still get a 1 or 2 star eventually. All authors get one at one time or another.

It sucks. I know. I get it, I really do. But all readers will have different tastes and try as we might, it's impossible to cater to them all and make everyone happy.

What can you do with the bad reviews? Learn from them.

Find out what the reader didn't like about your story, was it the fact that it head hopped? (Go back and pick a POV and stick with it.) Or it looked like you typed it with your feet? (Maybe find a new editor.)

Was your protagonist relatable/likable? Was your villain complex or just a lame plot device? (Develop your characters, ALL of them.)

The list could go on and on. But if you have tried and you just can't find anything to learn, forget

about it. Reread your positive reviews, and then go write your next book!

Even my worst review has taught me something.

It just said the back of the book made it sound better than it was.

Okay, that sucks, but I managed to find something to learn from it. (It was hard with so little explanation) But what it taught me was that I should learn to write blurbs in my same writing voice, so it doesn't throw people off, and to make it as clear as possible, without spoilers, but hopefully so it won't give the wrong impression.

Just remember kiddies, a low review will NOT ruin your career, it will not break any chance of your book making it. I can not tell you the number of times I've heard a reader saying they don't trust a book with all 5 star reviews. Why? Because it looks like you bought them. Some shady people have been known to do that in the past.

Why? I'm not sure. I'd rather spend that money on advertising, or food, or something fun, like a new camera lens.

It's not the number of stars that helps you, but the number of reviews.

In the end, take a lesson from J.K. Rowling herself, or even Meridith Wilde. You don't see them crying over 1 star reviews, yet they have them. What are they doing? Getting over it and smiling at the fact that far more people love their books than those who don't.

If you're just starting out, that's cool. You might not have thousands of reviews, but as long as you focus on the good, you will be okay.

The best revenge is to just keep at it, keep doing what you love, and share it.

In the end just remember this: Reviews are for readers, not authors.
